Ayurveda’s Perspective On Treating Anemia:

•Anemia is a condition which is marked by the deficiency of red blood cells (RBCs) or hemoglobin(Hb) in the blood. Normal Hb level of an adult female is 12-14 g/dl and that of an adult male is14-18 g/dl. When Hb level of a person falls below standard level, he is said to be anemic.

•In Ayurveda, anemia is called as “PanduRog”. It is caused due to loss of blood in the body, not having a proper diet, and malnutrition. All these factors can lead to the production of toxins i.e. “ama” in the stomach which block the channel called “rasa dhatu” (primary waters of the body) which further causes paleness and other symptoms of anemia.
Anemia is of three types:
1. Iron Deficiency Anemia (IDA): is the most common form of anemia. It can be caused due to insufficient intake of iron through diet or when the body is unable to absorb the required amount of iron. IDA is mostly seen in infants and pregnant women.
2. Megaloblastic Anemia: is caused due to deficiency of vitamin B12 or folic acid in the body.
3. Hemolytic anemia: is caused due to loss of blood in the body.

Depending upon the impairment of the doshas in the body, anemia in Ayurveda is classified as:
1.Vataj type: characterized by pale skin, constipation, black stools, breathlessness, crackingof joints and rough and dry skin.
2.Pittaj type: characterized by yellowing of the eyes, dark colored urine, dark brown or yellow stools and dizziness.
3.Kaphaj type: characterized by edema and cold and clammy skin.
*The combination of all three of the doshas is called Sannipataj (most common in children due to eating clay or dirt.)

Treatment of anemia according to Ayurveda:
1.Abhyhanga(massages which help to flush out toxins).
2.Exercise.
3.Diet: Increase the intake of food which is rich in iron such as beetroot, carrot, green leafyvegetable, apples, pomegranates, etc. Citrus fruits like orange help in absorption of iron. Shatavari ghee or bitter ghee can also help in curing anemia.
4.Herbs: Vitamin C in Triphala helps in absorption of iron in the body.
